The Rolex 116660 Sea Dweller Deep Sea replaces the venerable 16600 Sea Dweller (40mm), and at 44mm it is a beast of a watch on the wrist. At 44mm in diameter , the 116660 Deep Sea is one of the largest and thickest watches Rolex makes in its entire company lineup, and it broke the record for a retail mass production diver’s watch with water and pressure proof capabilities to 12,800 feet/3,900 meters. Introduced at the 2008 Baselworld show, the Deep Sea features Rolex’s first glidelock bracelet, one with an adjustment mechanism built into the clasp on this new 98210 bracelet. The caseback is made of titanium for additional water and pressure proof depth rating, and the bezel insert is the first ceramic bezel insert for the entire Rolex stainless diver lineup, followed by the 116610 Submariner date, 114060 Submariner no date, and 116600 Sea Dweller. The Rolex 116660 Deep Sea is powered by the same upgraded 3135 movement found in the 116610 ceramic Submariner. The movement features the new blue parachrom antimagnetic hairspring.
The crystal is very thick and shaped like a dome to spread water pressure in diving situations. The crystal is also 5.5mm thick, another special design feature that helps accomplish the 12,800 feet water proof capability. The dome shape crystal is also a fitting tribute to the Rolex 1665 Sea Dweller “Great White” and “Double Red” with their domed plexiglass crystals. Titanium helium gas escapement valve HEV is still on the left side of the case on this 116660 Deep Sea.
